Two Desert Vista teachers to travel abroad in prestigious study programs

Two Desert Vista teachers will have great stories and experiences to share in their classrooms after trips that will take them across the globe. DV Teacher Dawn Schmidt & Principal Dr. Christine Barela

Dawn Schmidt, a Social Studies teacher will be traveling to Dubai in March on an all-expenses-paid study trip. It’s part of a program offered by the World Affairs Council in Dallas, in partnership with the United Arab Emirates Embassy in Washington, D.C. She will be traveling with 11 other teachers.

“This is such an incredible opportunity to study the school system in Dubai,” Schmidt said.

According to World Affairs Council in Dallas, UAE, a nation of more than 9 million people, has a globally respected education system. The trip includes exploration of culture, education workshops, travel and community events and is designed to support curriculum development that "emphasizes 21st century skills and promotes collaboration between American and UAE educators."

Earlier this school year, earned the Arizona Council for the Social Studies (ACSS) Isidore Starr Distinguished Social Studies Teacher Award. The award honors an individual who has made long-term contributions to social studies education.

Another DV teacher, Linda Burrows will be traveling some 6,200 miles to Bosnia and Albania as part of another prestigious study program for educators.

The World History, Economics and AP Human Geography teacher will join six other high school teachers selected from across the country for the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program this summer.

Over the course of four weeks, she will study the geography, history, language, literature and culture of the Balkans.

Through grants obtained by the Maricopa College Office of International and Intercultural Education and the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES), participants’ airfare, room and board, fees and program-related travel within the host countries are covered.
 
“I’m really excited and honored to have been selected,” said Burrows. 
 
As part of the program, Burrows will be responsible for developing and implementing a curriculum project that is directly applicable to Desert Vista. She will .  his/her classroom or school) and will participate in the creation of a group language/linguistics instructional module. Following their return from the travel program, participants are also required to give at least one presentation during a school or professional event or to a community group.  

Desert Vista Principal Dr. Christine Barela could not be prouder to have these two women representing DV and Tempe Union High School District overseas. She called them both “amazing teachers.”
